SMSTS for Site Managers/Supervisors

The Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is one of the most highly regarded construction courses available for site managers and supervisors, and is taken by more than 10,000 people each year.

It helps each delegate to develop a better understanding of the legal, moral and social responsibilities of their role, and to manage Health and Safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions.

Why Choose SMSTS?

SMSTS is one of the most widely recognised courses for Site Managers, Agents and Supervisors. Certificate holders find it easier to prove their skills to contractors and clients and, in fact, many employers insist that all their Site Managers hold the certificate.

An SMSTS qualification helps in a number of other ways. It gives Site Managers, Agents and Supervisors the knowledge they need to prepare method statements, risk assessments and all other requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and because they are better equipped to identify potential hazards on site, their site is safer and more efficient.

The course is designed to be adapted to the needs of each individual to make sure they learn what's useful to them.

The SMSTS course is supported by CITB Grant which helps pay for the the training.

As part of the course you will also get:

  • GE700 Construction Site Safety book - the industry standard reference manual for Health and Safety.
  • XA6 The Site Management Safety Training Scheme Course Notes.

Contact your local CITB construction Skills Office before training takes place to ensure you are eligible for CITB grant.

How SMSTS Works

SMSTS is a five day course that can be taken on a day or block release basis. It trains each individual in the essential points of Health and Safety and shows them how to measure Health and Safety performance on their own site. At the end of the course each individual has to pass a multiple-choice test which qualifies them for the Construction Site Managers Safety Certificate. The certificate expires after five years.

After this period runs out, certificate holders have to sit a two-day refresher course to renew their qualification for a further five years. This course brings them up-to-date with recent developments in construction legislation and health and safety, welfare and environmental issues.
